Next Saturday, in the largest stadium in Detroit, Capuchin friar Solanus Casey will be declared Blessed! He is of special interest to us because both his parents were Irish-born, and he still has relatives living in Ireland. His father Bernard was born in Castleblaney (Co. Monaghan) and his mother Eileen Murphy was born in Camlough, Co. Armagh. Both emigrated to the USA after the Great Famine, where Solanus was born in Wisconsin in 1870. He was the sixth of sixteen children and entered the Capuchin Order in 1896, spending some years in New York, Detroit and Indiana. He worked for many years as doorkeeper and became known for his patience and his great compassion for the sick and poor. He was much sought after as a spiritual counsellor. He died in Detroit in 1957. One of his favourite sayings: Always try to have an attitude of gratitude.

We will celebrate a special Mass of Thanksgiving in Church Street on Friday 1st December at 7.30 pm. All welcome.
